100 years ago a Serbian terrorist, Gavrillo Princip, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Austrian heir to the throne.
The rest, as they say is history. Why did the First World War break out in 1914? Why did it so quickly engulf the whole of Europe and, ultimately, the world? How accurate is the “lions led by donkeys” view of our armed forces at this time? Why did the War last so long and what should we make of it all 100 years on?
